Guiding Values

Although I consider myself a dynamic leader, and try to approach each situation with the toolset it requires, there are a few core values that I embody in almost every venture in life;

Adventure: Whether in the backcountry or in business, it has always appealed to me, and I love pushing the envelope and testing my limits. I believe that if you don’t occasionally take risks and play for more than you can afford to lose, you don’t grow and improve as much as you can. I believe that failures force you to grow significantly more than successes, and the risks inherent in adventure occasionally lead to failure, which I greet with a notepad in hand every time.

Resourcefulness: I find that being adventurous also makes me resourceful, as I must use different tactics and think creatively to overcome unfamiliar obstacles. Approaching each challenge from multiple angles and using all the “tools” at my disposal allows for outcomes that may otherwise not have existed.

Authenticity: Authenticity is also extremely important to me; in my work, my relationships, and my internal reflections, I always do my best to remain true to who I am. I believe that when you are aligned with your true nature, life is easier; you work better, laugh harder, and think more clearly. However, I realize that my authentic self is constantly changing, which is why I also value Inquisitiveness.

Inquisitiveness: Being inquisitive is paramount to redefining my authenticity. Constantly questioning the Whys of the world, and not being afraid to explore the myriad of subjects I find interesting, allows me to draw connections between seemingly unlike topics and scenarios to come up with unique solutions (sounds resourceful, doesn’t it?).

Ownership: Finally, although the previous core values are deeply rooted in my personal ethic, ownership stands above them all. The knowledge that a venture, relationship, or experience is directly influenced by my actions, and that my contributions may well be the defining factor between boom or bust, is key in motivating me. Ownership is the reason I am so taken with outdoor experiences and entrepreneurial ventures; whether it’s climbing a mountain or starting a company, I know that success or failure rests on my shoulders.
